STAD--Also known as Street Tree Action Day!!

I am really, really excited for Street Tree Action Day!! I'm especially looking forward to the tree sing-along and learning from BxC students everything they know about taking care of street trees...

I'm also excited to adopt a tree on my own street--together we can make all of NYC a beautiful place to be. :)

We are so grateful for today we had a great morning planting,singing and learning about the trees in our community... We hope to continue the great works in our neighborhood.

Street Trees!

New York City street trees provide shade, improve air quality and beautify our concrete city. As you can imagine it is hard to be a NYC street tree--pollution, car doors, dogs, and litter make it difficult to grow strong and healthy.

Students at Bronx Community are taking action to care for Bronx street trees! Each day, they care for the 8 trees in front of our school, aerating the soil, watering and picking up litter in and around the tree pits. Our kindergarten and first graders are taking regular tree walks around the block to make observations, ask questions and learn more about what street trees experience in our Bronx neighborhood.

As students inquire about our urban forest they are also asking, "How can I help?" In addition to caring for street trees at school, students and their families are adopting a street tree on their home block. Our 92 BxC families can make a big impact on street trees in the Bronx!

Bronx Community Charter School

Everyday, students at Bronx Community work with materials, ask questions, gather information, look for answers, share ideas, and explore their world. Instruction takes place in a workshop setting that includes independent work time along with whole group, small group and individual instruction. The BxC curriculum includes Reading and Writing Workshop, word study, constructivist math, inquiry-based science, project-based social studies, visual and performing arts.

At BxC, students learn to be critical thinkers and problem solvers, working together to improve their world. Children spend time learning about their community. Together, students and teachers plan and carry out community action projects that connect curriculum to the realities of life beyond their classroom. Students learn how to create change and become advocates for themselves and their neighborhoods.
